| The Secretariat of the Pacific Community and UNEP Join Forces to Phase-Out Inefficient Lighting
The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) convened the 2nd joint Pacific Regional Energy and Transport Ministers meeting to address accessible, sustainable, affordable and efficient energy and transport services in the Pacific region.
The event held in April in Nadi, Fiji, facilitated an idea exchange on how Pacific Island Countries can address challenges and ensure sustainable energy and transportation. The meeting also highlighted the energy efficient lighting efforts that will be undertaken in the region through a collaboration between SPC and the UNEP-GEF en.lighten initiative.
Nineteen country representatives from 12 Pacific countries agreed on the following successive steps: 1) estimate the quantitative environmental and economic benefits of a regional transition to energy efficient lighting; 2) identify regional and national priorities for a regional transition to efficient lighting; 3) draft a detailed regional strategy following an integrated and coordinated approach; and, 4) adapt the regional plan to national contexts and specific needs.
An inception workshop, hosted by UNEP, will be held in the region from 22 – 23 September, 2014 to define the priorities and activities to be included in a Regional Efficient Lighting Strategy such as: harmonized standards; monitoring, verification and enforcement activities; and a regional collection and recycling approach.
