The UNEP/GEF en.lighten initiative along with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) held a workshop entitled “The Transition to Efficient Lighting in South Asia” in New Delhi, India from 26- 27 September 2013. The countries that participated included: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Attendees included government representatives from the Ministries of Energy and Environment, state designated agencies, international organizations, the private sector and civil society.
The meeting served to increase awareness on the benefits of a transition to energy efficient lighting following an integrated policy approach. A regionally coordinated framework to transition to energy efficient lighting was established and participants agreed to move to have policies in place for the phase-out of inefficient incandescent lamps in line with the global en.lighten target date of 2016.
