Partner Profile – OSRAM AG

In September 2009, OSRAM AG was one of the first private sector companies to become a partner in a new $20 million global initiative to accelerate the transformation to energy efficient lighting systems.

As a founding partner of the UNEP en.lighten initiative, OSRAM is committed to creating sustainable products and processes and helping to achieve permanent reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In fact, OSRAM is a pioneer in the field of energy efficient lighting solutions that reduce CO2 emissions with their Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and Off Grid sustainability projects.

OSRAM, as an organization, has taken a holistic approach to sustainability. The company’s “Global Care” program represents their commitment to social and environmental responsibility worldwide. As a leader in innovative lighting solutions, they are dedicated to products and processes that contribute to solving global sustainability challenges, address economic needs and protect the environment for today and for the future.

OSRAM is actively involved in making light an affordable commodity in off-grid areas. On Lake Victoria in Kenya, they have implemented a unique project for producing light independently from a grid-based power supply. At a specially constructed energy hub (OSRAM O-HUB), local people can recharge batteries for energy-saving lamps, luminaires and other electrical appliances - such as compatible mobile phones and radios - at low cost and without damaging the environment. According to Wolfgang Gregor, Chief Sustainability Officer, "Around 1.6 billion people throughout the world still do not have access to electric light. We want to turn light into an affordable commodity for people in these regions – and contribute to sustainable development. We are proud to be the first lighting manufacturer in the world to offer a sustainable lighting solution for regions without power supply networks.”

OSRAM AG is part of the Industry Sector of Siemens and one of the two leading lighting manufacturers in the world. Over 70 percent of the company’s sales are derived from energy-efficient products. This global player employs around 40,000 people worldwide, supplies customers in some 150 countries and has 42 production facilities in 16 countries. (www.osram.com)
