Energy Efficient Lighting as a “High Impact Opportunity”
Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) is an important initiative launched by the United Nations Secretary-General to mobilize urgent global action. It brings all sectors of society together in an unprecedented effort to transform the world's energy systems. Three inter-linked objectives for the initiative have been identified to be achieved by 2030: 1) ensure universal access to modern energy services, 2) double the rate of improvement in energy efficiency and 3) double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix. All of these objectives are to be achieved by 2030.
The en.lighten initiative was one of the original collaborators and made a commitment to promote the transition to efficient lighting through the implementation of an integrated policy approach which will effectively phase-out inefficient incandescent lamps by the end of 2016.
SE4All has identified advanced lighting and appliance efficiency has been identified as a High-Impact Opportunity (HIO) as part of the SE4All Action Agenda. UNEP is co-leading the HIO for the advanced lighting component, along with the US Department of Energy and CLASP. The HIOs are defined based on their significance and ability to make an immediate impact towards reaching the Sustainable Energy for All's three objectives noted above.
High-Impact Opportunities, such as advanced lighting, are poised to drive positive outcomes in extending and improving the access to sustainable energy around the world through strong partnerships, common actions, and lasting commitments.
