| The en.lighten Project Steering Committee Details the Way Forward
The fourth annual meeting of the en.lighten Project Steering Committee provided strategic direction for ongoing activities of the en.lighten initiative. The Project Steering Committee members include high level representatives from the Natural Resources Defense Council, International Energy Agency, National Lighting Test Centre, United Nations Development Programme, the GEF, OSRAM, Philips Lighting, the World Bank and UNEP.
Guest attendees at the event included presenters from the US Department of Energy representing the Super Efficient Appliance Deployment (SEAD) and Global Leap initiatives. The Global Off-Grid Lighting Association (GOGLA) also participated inthe meeting, as the latest partner of the en.lighten initiative.
The Project Steering Committee meets once a year to provide strategic direction and ensure that an integrated approach to energy efficient lighting is occurring globally. An important topic at this year’s meeting was the need for continued support for national and regional efficient lighting strategies that are occurring in en.lighten Partner countries.
The potential exists to double energy savings by addressing new lighting applications in the professional and outdoor sectors. The en.lighten initiative appealed to the Committee members in order to develop new resources and support for these new sectors and applications. There is also a need to move forward with a phase-in approach with new technologies such as LEDs and lighting controls. With a transition to LEDs, it is important that policy measures be implemented to ensure product quality and that consumer expectations are met.
