Country Lighting Assessments

Most developed countries have a comprehensive set of policies to facilitate a rapid transition to efficient lighting. Some developing and emerging countries are leaders in implementing a comprehensive and sustainable transition to overcome financial, informational or political barriers that are associated with the adoption of new lighting technologies. Other countries are launching market based transformation efforts for efficient lighting. However, many countries around the world have still not initiated this transition toward energy efficient lighting and have yet to experience the associated economic and climate benefits.

The Country Lighting Assessments estimate the savings potential of a country from the phase-in of energy efficient lighting. These assessments consider savings potentials for (1) the on-grid lighting market, encompassing the residential, commercial/industrial and outdoor lighting sectors, and (2) the off-grid lighting market, in countries that have a high number of off-grid end users.

The on-grid lighting assessments incorporate a transition to installed lighting that includes high efficiency products such as light emitting diodes (LEDs) and advanced fluorescent and high intensity discharge (HID) lamps. The use of improved luminaires and controls such as sensors and dimmers, would also contribute to increased savings benefits. The off-grid lighting assessments model a transition from fuel-based lighting, such as kerosene lanterns and candles, to one based on solar-powered LED lighting.

The Country Lighting Assessments utilize the best available data and market intelligence from international agencies, research institutions and the private sector including: the World Bank, the International Energy Agency, OSRAM, Philips, Lighting Africa, the Global Off-Grid Lighting Association, and many other sources.
