Climate Change Mitigation Benefits

A global shift to high efficiency lighting would result in less CO2 being emitted into the atmosphere. Upgrading all lighting globally would achieve annual CO2 reductions of 490 Mt (million tons). This is equivalent to the combined yearly CO2 emissions of Italy and Denmark.

To get a sense of the magnitude of these reductions, achievable efficient lighting savings can be related to the emissions of vehicles: 490Mt of CO2per year is equivalent to the  annual emissions of more than 122 million mid-size cars. In terms of CO2reduction potentials among the main two groups of UNFCCC signatories, Annex I countries would stand to gain around 46 per cent of these energy savings and Non-Annex I countries would benefit from 54 per cent.
