The June 2013 issue of Sustainable Cities has just been released. This publication is circulated twice a year to the sustainable urban development community to assists them to make better and more informed decisions regarding their planning and procurement.

Approximately half of the world’s population, 3.5 billion people, currently lives in cities and by 2055 an estimated 75% of the world’s population will live in urban areas. Cities occupy just 2% of the Earth’s land, but account for over 70% of both energy consumption and carbon emissions.

Urban areas are uniquely positioned to lead the greening of the global economy through improvements in areas such as energy, buildings and technology, with energy efficient lighting at the forefront. A transition to energy efficient lighting will produce a wide range of economic and social benefits for countries and regions around the world.

The article, written by the en.lighten initiative’s Communications Officer, Laura Fuller, highlights the need for urgent global action to combat the increase in electricity demand and consumption with efficient lighting as a rapid and cost-efficient solution.
