Efficient Lighting for Developing and Emerging Countries

| About en.lighten
The demand for electricity is expected to rise dramatically around the world and for lighting alone, it is expected to increase by 60 per cent over the next 20 years. Electricity for lighting accounts for 19 per cent of global power consumption and 6 - 8 per cent of worldwide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions - more than the total emissions of Germany and Japan combined. If a global transition to efficient lighting occurred, these emissions could be reduced by half.
The UNEP/GEF en.lighten initiative has been established to address the challenge of accelerating global market transformation to environmentally sustainable lighting technologies by developing a coordinated global strategy and providing technical support for the gradual phase-out of inefficient lighting. This will reduce global GHGs from the lighting sector and mercury released from coal combustion.
The UNEP en.lighten initiative is committed to supporting emerging countries in their efforts to develop national energy efficient lighting initiatives and is a partnership between UNEP, Philips Lighting and OSRAM GmbH, with the support of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Earth Fund.
