LED Standards in India

As part of their inefficient lighting phase-out program in India, the Ministry of Power within the Government of India, is promoting the widespread penetration of LED lights throughout the country. It was identified that a key deliverable of the program would be to draft standards for LEDs so that minimum performance requirements would be met. Taking into account the wide range of quality levels from the various manufacturers of LED products, it was decided that a minimum benchmark for LEDs should be announced by the National Standards Body, otherwise known as the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). The BIS held a stakeholder meeting in September of 2010 to discuss and draft Standards for performance for lamps, luminaires and drivers.

Lighting standards from around the world were taken into account during the discussions. The en.lighten initiative’s Taskforce on Policy and Standards served as a critical forum to kick offa dialogue for the development of the Indian LED standards. The stakeholders compiled many documents available from the U.S. Department of Energy (USDoE), the European Union and the technical committee documents of IEC. By utilizing the information available, the stakeholders developed a draft of  standards for LEDs which will be finalized by the BIS by the third week of March, 2011.  These Standards have been created by the knowledge-sharing between the various governments and key technical contacts working within the field of LED lighting and taskforce members of the en.lighten initiative.
