Country Lighting Assessments

By simply replacing all incandescent lamps around with world with energy efficient compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), 409 TWh (Terawatt hours) per year would be saved, which is approximately 2.3% of the global electricity consumption. This equates to cost savings of approximately US$47 billion and US$112 billion avoided investment in additional generation capacity . Various countries have already commenced with phase-out programs such as; Cuba (2005), Australia (2007) and the European Union (2009) however, there are still a very large number of developing and emerging countries which have not initiated this transition and have still to realize the economic and climate benefits of such a move.

Comprehensive Country Lighting Assessments have been developed for 100 countries that have not yet made the shift to efficient lighting and clearly highlight the energy, financial and CO2 savings potential of an energy efficient lighting strategy if it were to be implemented. These initial Country Lighting Assessments focus on the significant savings from the replacement of all installed inefficient incandescent lamps with energy saving CFLs lamps with equivalent light output, and can be viewed online at:

The en.lighten initiative is currently working on the second generation of Country Lighting Assessments which will provide a complete overview of the benefits of efficient lighting when utilized on a wide scale in the commercial and industrial sector.  This will include the full range of lighting technologies from LEDs and energy-saving fluorescent systems for indoor applications, to metal halide and induction technology for outdoor lighting installations. The country results will be released by the end of 2011.
