en.lighten website updates

The en.lighten website has been updated with the latest country activities in a new section entitled “In Action.” Here you can find information on the development of policies, strategies and actions for the phase-out of inefficient lighting products in Latin America and the Caribbean; the Middle East and Africa; and Asia.

Information about the Global Efficient Lighting Partnership Programme can also be found here. This voluntary UNEP initiative sets shared objectives and provides technical support to assist countries to develop and implement viable National Efficient Lighting Strategies and coordinated regional activities.

Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) Blog

Written by Noah Horowitz, the NRDC blog encourages the switch to energy saving lighting products for the more than 4 billion screw-based light bulb sockets in the United States. U.S. lighting options have significantly improved in the past few years due to the phase-out of inefficient incandescent lamps and their replacement with energy-saving alternatives.

The NRDC’s updated Light Bulb Buying Guide provides information for the three primary lamp types available today including halogen, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

New Clean Development Mechanism Methodology

A new United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) procedure for Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) lighting projects has been introduced. Amongst other features, the new methodology also applies to LED light sources for the first time in CDM. It also includes simple additionality criteria - based on your lighting policy studies and encourages projects that continuously replace lamps, by requiring monitoring only for the first group of lamps installed.

The en.lighten initiative was a major contributor to this document and has succeeded in ensuring that it is user-oriented.
